How OpenCode, Claude Code, and Codex Commonly Fit
These tools evolve fast, but in practice many teams currently use them in roughly this way:
- OpenCode-style terminal agent: strong for repo-aware execution, scripted workflows, and concrete implementation tasks.
- Claude Code-style assistant: strong for reasoning, refactors, and high-context planning across multiple files.
- Codex-style workflows: strong when deeply integrated into coding tasks and model-assisted iteration loops.
Decision Framework
1. Start from Risk, Not Features
If you operate in regulated environments or sensitive repositories, begin with governance requirements. Data policy can remove half your options immediately.
2. Match the Interface to the Job
- Bug fixing in known codebase: terminal or IDE agent
- Architecture decisions and trade-offs: chat-first reasoning
- Migration execution: terminal agent with command visibility
3. Optimize for Reviewability
Generated code is cheap. Review time is expensive. Pick tools that keep diffs understandable and make command history visible.

Use terminal agents for execution, chat assistants for reasoning, and IDE features for micro-iteration. Teams that combine interfaces by role, rather than hunting for one perfect tool, usually get better results and lower cognitive overhead.
